“He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.” -John 10:3b
The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a beautiful Catholic faith formation program founded by Dr. Sofia Cavalletti, a Scripture and Hebrew scholar in Rome, after over forty years of work with children. Sophia and her collaborator, Gianna Gobbi, successfully developed this form of Catechesis using Montessori principles. They provided an environment called an atrium in which certain Biblical and liturgical themes suitable to the children’s developmental needs are presented. Following this model, the catechist combines song, prayer, and a presentation, and gives the opportunity for the children to work independently. Each presentation has a Biblical or liturgical theme where the children and catechists listen together to God’s word and respond prayerfully. All the materials in the room are lovingly prepared treasures for discovering more about God’s plan.Children spend time reflecting by working with the materials and other fine motor work. This work of the children invites them into a relationship with God, and into the life of the Church. We are blessed to have Level I for children ages 3-6 and Level II for children ages 6-9. Our mission is to provide a place and time for children to experience God’s loving presence. We proclaim the words of Isaiah. “I have called you by name, you are mine…. because you are precious in my sight.” (Is. 43:1, 4)
